FAQ

MILK

Q. What is raw milk?
Raw milk is animal milk (ours is from cows) that has never been cooked, heated, or treated to remove any of its natural goodness.  It has not been pasteurized or homogenized.  It's milk straight from the cow, filtered into a jug, and cooled quickly in ice water.

Q. Is raw milk legal?

A. Each state has different laws regarding raw milk. In some states it is completely legal to sell raw milk that is inspected by the state being qualified “for human consumption”. In some states it is legal to sell with restrictions or allowances. Examples of these restrictions/allowances are herd shares, adding dyes, limiting the amount of cows, farm pick ups only or special labeling . ie “pet grade”, “pet use” or “not for human consumption”. North Carolina allows herd share purchases OR the special labeling for pet use, “not for human consumption”. This means no state or federal body has inspected the product, animal or facility.

Q. Is raw milk safe?

A. There is no other food that has the same built-in safety system like the one in raw milk. Raw milk contains bioactive components that kill pathogens! However, as with any food, there is risk, and you get to decide if the risk is worth the reward. You must understand there is no governing body inspecting our milk for human consumption. It is considered a pet treat. We test daily for mastitis and our milking system is extremely clean and sanitary.

Q. What kind of cows do you milk?

A. Our girls are all A2A2, registered Jersey cows. They give the creamiest, most delicious and healthy milk!

Q. What is A2A2 milk?

A. A2A2 milk comes from cows that have two copies of the A2 gene for beta casein.  A2A2 milk does not carry the BCM7 peptide, which is thought to have pro-inflammatory properties and could lead to a wide variety of chronic diseases. A2A2 may be tolerable for people with a casein allergy or intolerance.

Q. How long will the milk stay fresh?

A. Keep your milk refrigerated below 38 degrees and it should stay fresh for 7-10 days. After that, it may start to sour, but it is still usable in cooking. Milk can be frozen if you don’t plan to use it for a while.

Q. Will I get milk year-round?

A. Grass-fed Raw Milk is definitely a seasonal product. We are very good at producing winter milk most of the time. There are still some limitations to what we can do. Sometimes you will receive less milk over the winter and I invoice you as the season goes along according to what the cows are able to produce.

Q. What if the milk supply is short?

A. If I need to short you, I will refund or create a store credit for you.

Q. Can I get raw milk only?

A. YES! You can buy milk in half gallon jugs or glass quart jars. Milk only must be on a subscription, weekly or biweekly. Scroll down to Section 3 on this order form to purchase milk only.

Q. Why does the pet milk label say "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION"?

A. In North Carolina, it is legal to sell raw milk as a pet treat, given the product is registered with the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  One of their requirements is having a label which includes the phrase "Not For Human Consumption".

Q. What is a herdshare?

A. Raw milk can be legally obtained for human consumption from a farm where you own all or part of a cow / goat or herd.  This is called herd-sharing.  We do not currently offer herd shares, but may in the future.  In the case of herd-shared, we would not have to include the label.A herdshare agreement is a private contractual arrangement in which someone purchases an ownership interest in a dairy animal (or herd of dairy animal) and pays a fee to a farmer for boarding, caring for and milking the animals. The 2018 North Carolina Farm Bill contained a provision stating, “nothing . . . shall prohibit the dispensing of raw milk or raw milk products for personal use or consumption to, or the acquisition of raw milk or raw milk products for personal use or consumption by, an independent or partial owner of a cow, goat, or other lactating animal.”

Q. What do you feed your cows?

A. Our hard-working ladies eat a healthy diet of high-quality grass and hay all year. They are considered grass-fed and pasture-raised. We supplement with small amount of barley, alfalfa, molasses, and a little bit of sweet feed, which contains a mixture of oats, barley, corn, bran, brewers yeast, and some extra vitamin/mineral pellets. The sweet feed is a treat for the cows while they are being milked.

Q. Do you milk the cows by hand?

A. We use a machine to milk the cows. Their udders/teats are cleaned before the machine is attached. The milk goes from the machine into a closed bucket system, keeping the milk sealed off from anything in the barn. The milk then goes through an in-line filtration system and finally diverted into half gallon plastic jugs or glass quart jars.

FERMENTS

Q. What are the health benefits of fermented foods?

A. The fermentation process utilizes probiotics to predigest the veggies to unlock more nutrients and reduce sugar content. The probiotics remain in the foods and are super healthy for your gut health.

Q. What are probiotics?

A. Probiotics are bacteria that are typically found in your digestive system. Many things in life can kill off the probiotics in our gut, like antibiotics, stress, and an unbalanced diet.  Eating foods rich in probiotics can replenish those you've lost which will aid digestion.  There's loads of studies out there, but not a lot of them are peer-reviewed (a verification process) so for now we'll just say probiotics aid digestion and help you to get the most out of the food you eat.
